Case Study: Sheraton skyline hotel london heathrow - commercial solar lighting upgrade

Client Overview

The Sheraton London Heathrow is a high-profile hotel situated near one of the world’s busiest airports. As part of its commitment to sustainability, the hotel aimed to modernise its outdoor lighting system to reduce energy usage and improve operational efficiency, all while maintaining excellent lighting standards for its expansive car park.

Project Scope

We were chosen to retrofit the existing street lighting system in the hotel’s car park. The project involved upgrading 55 lighting columns to our hybrid solar street lighting from the Sonne range.

The Solution

Hybrid Solar Street Lights

We installed state-of-the-art hybrid solar street lights that seamlessly integrate solar power with grid backup, ensuring consistent performance even during low sunlight conditions.

Key Features of the Solution

Advanced Technology

  • The installation utilised a combination of fittings from the Sonne range, including the NZSSL-56 (6000 lumens) and NZSSL-59 (9000 lumens).
  • The fittings include smart features, such as the ability to adjust their colour temperature from 4000 Kelvin to 3000 Kelvin during rainfall, enhancing visibility in wet conditions.

Energy-Efficient Features

  • Each fitting was set to Mode 1, operating at 30% output during normal conditions. When the PIR motion sensors detect activity, the lights increase to 100% output, ensuring energy is used only when needed.
  • The system as a whole achieves an average energy reduction of 70%, delivering significant savings compared to traditional systems.

Enhanced Design and Visual Appeal

The old lighting system, which featured dated and inefficient fittings, was replaced with modern and sleek designs, significantly improving the aesthetic of the car park.

Custom Retrofit Design

Existing columns were retained and adapted to house the new fittings, minimising installation time and site disruption. Swift Installation The entire project, encompassing the transformation of 55 lighting columns, was completed in just four days, ensuring minimal impact on the hotel’s operations.

Results

Energy Savings

The hybrid solar lighting solution has significantly reduced the car park’s energy consumption, cutting costs while maintaining optimal performance.

Cost Benefits

The hotel achieved annual operational savings, resulting in an impressive payback period of just 15 months.

Environmental Impact

By integrating renewable solar energy, the Sheraton London Heathrow has taken a meaningful step towards reducing its carbon footprint, supporting its broader sustainability goals.

Improved Safety and Aesthetics

The new fittings not only enhanced safety with improved visibility, but also modernised the car park’s appearance, offering a sleek and professional finish that complements and is in line with the Sheraton brand.

Enhanced Functionality

Dynamic colour temperature adjustments during rainfall ensure optimal visibility and safety in all weather conditions. PIR sensitivity ensures maximum energy efficiency by increasing output only when motion is detected.
